DESIGN LOOKOUT 11 : BECKY KEMP

DESIGN LOOKOUT 11 : BECKY KEMP

I have a treat to share for those whimsical readers out there! I discovered Becky's work almost a year ago on good ol' Instagram, and she is definitely one of my favorite people to follow; she won't disappoint. That inner child in me just loves everything she produces, and her beautiful feed engrosses you into this magical Kokeshi doll world you never knew you'd be so into. Let me just cut to the chase- super talented girl! Apart from her fun dolls she also creates other goodies, but I'll let you browse her website ;)

Here's a little background on the wonderful gal behind these dolls :)

Every creation begins life on the pages of a sketchbook. My work has long been inspired by a love for Nordic design and Japanese Illustration, sketching and painting since I was a child I carry a sketchbook in my pocket 24/7. I currently work from my home studio in the South-East of England.

DESIGN LOOKOUT 10 : ASYA KOZINA

Design Lookout 10 : Asya Kozina

Hey guys, do I have a treat for you! Thanks to my lovely friend who posted this gem the other day, I thought I'd share this treasure for the rest of the crowd! After seeing these amazing creations I had no choice but to research the artist behind all of this talent; let's just say I quickly became one of her biggest fans.

Ukraine native, Asya Kozina began her love for paper sculptures since her childhood, and thus flourished her numerous jaw-dropping paper exhibitions. Her latest work are these wig sculptures; they're nothing short of amazing. Additional kudos to these beautiful editorial photographs taken by Anastasia Andreeva.

Here are a few words by the artist herself, regarding her inspiration towards these wigs:

Historical wigs always fascinated me, especially the Baroque era. This is art for art's sake aesthetics for aesthetics, no practical sense. But they are beautiful. I made a series of wigs. Paper helps to highlight in this case the main form and not be obsessed unnecessary details.

P.S. Remember that friend of mine I mentioned earlier that brought this artist to my attention? Well, if you're in the UK area and need a make up artist... don't doubt that she's your gal! You can get in touch with her loveliness right here.

DESIGN LOOKOUT 09 : INKED

Design Lookout 09 : Inked | InBetween the Curls

One of my favorite things about the 'Design Lookout' column is that I find delicious eye candy from any creative spark; it doesn't necessarily have to be graphic design. For today's column I thought I'd share more of the permanent works of art. I've always had a fascination with skin art, I personally don't have a sleeve of tattoos but I think it's such an amazing talent to have. I mean, you can't really press the delete button once you've inked... As the years progress more tattoo artist have broken out of that 'I <3 mom' stereotype and have really done stunning work. If you don't believe me just check out a few of these...

MOODBOARD : TRADITIONAL HUMOR

Moodboard : Traditional Humor | InBetween the Curls

So I must admit, it's been a while since I shared some work, or at least the progress of a new project that I'm working on. Talk about slacker... Insanely enough, this moodboard took me forever and a minute to actually land on this final piece. Nothing seemed quite right when I was rearranging my thoughts and images as to what this brand could and should become... Fast forward to today and I'm super happy and excited for how this design project is going to pan out. I may say this every time, but this one is going to be a good one- Ha!

So what's the story behind this brand? Well it's based in Spain, but apart from the obvious, this project combines my love of food and tradition - how good is that?! This small, quaint tapas bar is known for its enjoyable gatherings between friends and families and what brings them together: food and drinks. The simple things are really the most enjoyable things in life; this place is living proof of it. Every inch of this bar is designed with pure Spanish culture, you can really feel it in its atmosphere. In my design thought process I want to keep those traditions, but since they attract a young crowd I want to modernize the whole branding vibe with a humorous twist. I mean, it's not the south of Spain if you don't bring humor into the everyday life. And on that note, I will let the details unravel more down the line as the project comes together...

DELICIOUS SPACES : CREOQUETE

Delicious Spaces : Creoquete | InBetween the Curls

Whenever I go to a restaurant I have this thing where I immediately perceive the space before I even dig into what they have to offer - Joey makes fun of me every time... I'm sure many designers are with me on this; you just so happen to live, breathe, and in this case eat design on a daily basis. From an outsiders point of view I'm sure it sounds exhausting, but I think it's a pretty sweet deal that you love something so much that you can't stop thinking about it; you tend to notice the smallest details that others may not even pick up on - it's so satisfying haha. Enough of me nerding out though! Do I have a space to share that is just the most delicious thing I've seen in a minute?!

I stumbled upon this croquette shop based in Spain when I was browsing a design studio from there, and I have to say I've never seen a better way to display the most mouth watering food from my home country. I mean, croquettes pretty much speak for themselves, but this added bonus of interior graphics really takes the fried goodness to a whole new level!

The design agency, Atipo really outdid themselves on this one! I just can't wait to go over there and just experience this place, and of course eat...

From what I've researched they have a few franchises in Spain, so if you're in the area... you know what to do :D
