Flair |fler| 1. A special or instinctive aptitude or ability for doing something well.
Hello from Idaho everyone! Although I'm on holiday and travelled cross-country I didn't want to deprive anyone from our weekly Creative Flairs, so here it is! I'm sure many of you who follow design blogs know of this special someone since she's pretty fabulous in all that she does :)
In a few sentences, describe yourself and what you do.
Hi everyone, my name is Corina, and I’m a graphic designer and letterer. At the moment I’m living in the beautiful Greek island of Kefalonia, where I’ve been freelancing for the past 4 years. I also run a blog - Cocorrina - the place where my passion for design started.
How did you first get into design + lettering? What’s your favorite part about it?
I recently discovered a video that my friends and I did; a mini interview when we were 14. We were asking each other what we wanted to do when we grew up, and I was the only one that was so confident about what she wanted.
“I want to be a famous designer!” That’s exactly what I said :) I can remember even when I was 6-7 I’d create puppets and a small theatre in kindergarten, the need to create was always there. In my first year of college I was introduced to designer basics and immediately found my calling.
My favourite part I’d say would be the fact that I’m living a creative life. It makes me feel fulfilled, it’s what fuels me and makes me happy.
Do you have any creative heroes that you admire & have inspired you? Who & How?
Way too many! I wouldn’t even know where to begin... Let’s see, just to name a few, Wes Anderson - he’s simply brilliant, he made me think of boxes, lines, and alignments. Gustav Klimt - I got the love of gold, textures, and working with feelings from him.
And lastly Lykke Li - love her passion, style, and darkness.
What inspires your designs? What is your process?
Absolutely everything around me. From the temperature outside when I wake up, to the breeze when I open the door, the colours the sky takes in at sunset, the feeling of the water around me. Whenever I close my eyes, I see colours, shapes, and concepts. Although I fail at writing them down, some are stronger than others so they end up being designs.
Regarding my process, it’s chaotic. Mostly lots of music, closed door, natural light, relaxation, and getting into the mood of design. Depending on the concept I’ll either sketch, or start designing straight onto my laptop.
What is your favorite piece of work you have done and why?
It would be like choosing one of your babies! I don’t think I could pick one, they were all made under different circumstances, feelings, and emotions. Although I have some that are my least favourites, they all have a piece of me.
Apart from design, you also created your own jewelry. How did this come about?
I started creating jewellery when my husband and I first moved to Kefalonia Island. It was the need to have a creative outlet, at that point of my life I was having the very first steps as a freelance designer. About 2 years ago, I stopped designing jewellery as it did not feel fulfilling anymore, design filled all of the creative gaps :)
You are a very successful freelance designer, and very renowned in the web realm. Do you have any advice for those wanting to follow in your steps?
Thank you so much for the sweet words, I’m truly flattered. I’d probably say the things I wish someone would have told me when I was struggling and comparing myself with successful designers.
It really takes some time to discover yourself, your style in the creative world. Practicing a lot, being patient, determined, and passionate are key words if you want to be the best at what you do. We are all different and we all create our own paths, so sit down and think about what’s yours, how you want to be different and focus on just that.
Do you have a dream/goal that you wish to aspire?
I wouldn’t say I really have one. My goal is always to be driven by creativity, especially feeling that I've evolved and become better at what I do, even if that includes other creative outlets.
If you could live and work anywhere in the world where would you go and why?
Oh! That’s a tough one. If i could, I would probably live in a different place every 6 months. Thailand, Iceland, but would definitely want to stay a little longer in Hawaii.
Early bird or night owl?
Definitely an early bird! I love waking up before the sun rises, have a coffee, get inspired, and then start working! Most of all, I enjoy having the rest of the day to do whatever I want and go to bed early.
